What is Lexotanil and when is it used?

This drug belongs to the benzodiazepine group and contains the active substance bromazepam. Lexotanil is indicated for the treatment of states of tension and anxiety, insecurity and fear, nervousness, agitation and insomnia caused by fear and tension. Lexotanil is also used to calm cardiovascular, respiratory and gastrointestinal disorders caused by anxiety and nervous tension. Lexotanil does not, however, eliminate the very causes of anxiety and nervous tension.

What does Lexotanil contain?

1 white tablet contains 1.5 mg, 1 light pink tablet 3 mg and 1 green tablet 6 mg of bromazepam.

How to use Lexotanil?

Small doses of up to 6 mg per day are usually sufficient, but your doctor may also find it necessary to prescribe a higher dose. Anxiolytics, given in high doses over a prolonged period, can be addictive. Therefore, follow the instructions of your doctor. Do not change the dosage on your own and do not stop the treatment without first asking your doctor for advice.

If you are over 60, your body will be more sensitive to the effects of Lexotanil. Your doctor will possibly prescribe a lower dose to see how you respond to the treatment. Follow your doctor's prescriptions.

Take Lexotanil before or during meals. The tablet should be swallowed whole with half a glass of water or fruit juice.

Do not change the dose you have been prescribed on your own. If you think the action of the drug is too weak or too strong, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.

What side effects can Lexotanil have?

With the administration of Lexotanil the following side effects may arise:

The most frequent side effects are fatigue, lethargy, headache, impaired concentration, diplopia and dizziness. These disorders arise mainly at the beginning of treatment and generally disappear with continued therapy.

Occasionally gastrointestinal disturbances and decreased libido occur.

Additional side effects observed are confusion, decreased alertness, amnesia, motor disturbances, breathing disturbances, nausea, dry mouth (xerostomia), drop in blood pressure, increased appetite and muscle weakness. An increased risk of falls and fractures was also observed in older people.

More rarely there are effects contrary to the expected sedative ones, such as anxiety, excitement, irritability, aggression and nightmares. If you experience these symptoms at the start of treatment, please tell your doctor straight away.

If you notice any side effects not described in this leaflet you should inform your doctor or pharmacist.

When can Lexotanil not be taken/used and when its administration / use requires caution?

You should not take Lexotanil in case of:

- hypersensitivity (allergy) to one or more components (hypersensitivity manifests itself for example with skin rashes),

- severe impairment of respiratory function,

- nocturnal breathing disorders (sleep apnea),

- severe impairment of liver function,

- pathological muscle weakness (myasthenia gravis) or

- addiction to alcohol, drugs or medications.

This drug can adversely affect the ability to react, the ability to drive and use machines!

Alcoholic beverages enhance the sedative effect of Lexotanil, so you may react inaccurately, clumsily or too slowly. This can be particularly dangerous if you have to drive vehicles or operate machinery. It is therefore recommended that alcoholic beverages be avoided during treatment with Lexotanil.

Lexotanil tablets contain lactose. You should not take the medicine if you have certain inherited disorders of sugar metabolism

Severe mental illness or depressive disorders cannot be cured with Lexotanil alone.

Tell your doctor if you have lung or liver disease.

Like all benzodiazepines, Lexotanil can be taken by children and adolescents under the age of 18 only on express medical prescription.

Anxiolytics, sleeping pills, antiepileptics, strong analgesics and drugs that act on the central nervous system and nerves can enhance the effect of Lexotanil; therefore they should only be taken with the doctor's consent.

As is the case with other benzodiazepines, Lexotanil therapy can cause amnesia. Its manifestation consists in the fact that eventually, usually a few hours after taking it, the patient performs actions, which he can later no longer remember.

Tell your doctor if you take muscle relaxant drugs, as Lexotanil also has a certain muscle relaxant effect.

Addiction

The use of benzodiazepines, and therefore also of Lexotanil, can induce the development of a physical and psychological dependence which occurs especially in the case of uninterrupted administration for a long period of time (in some cases already after a few weeks). In this case, abrupt cessation of treatment will be accompanied by withdrawal symptoms, such as anxiety and fear, insomnia, difficulty concentrating, headache and sweating. These symptoms usually disappear after two to three weeks.

To minimize the risk of drug dependence, the following should be observed:

- Take Lexotanil only when prescribed by your doctor.

- Never increase the prescribed dose.

- Tell your doctor if you want to stop the treatment.

- Your doctor will decide from time to time whether to continue or discontinue therapy.

- The administration of Lexotanil for prolonged periods (usually more than four weeks) requires careful medical supervision.

Tell your doctor or pharmacist just in case

- suffer from other diseases,

- suffer from allergies or

- take or apply other medicines (even if purchased on your own initiative).

Can Lexotanil be taken/used while pregnant or breastfeeding?

Lexotanil should not be taken during pregnancy.

However, if there are overriding reasons, your doctor can make an exception. Of course you should tell your doctor if you are pregnant or intend to become pregnant.

Lexotanil passes into breast milk, which is why it is contraindicated during breastfeeding.

How and when does Lexotanil treatment end?

Your doctor will decide with you when to discontinue treatment with Lexotanil. Always remember that Lexotanil is not a drug to be taken for prolonged periods and that after a few weeks you can try, of course in agreement with the doctor, to do without it. If you have taken Lexotanil for a long time in high doses and suddenly stop treatment, your body may react in the following way: After two or three days without problems, symptoms similar to those you had before suddenly develop, especially sleep disturbances. This is a natural adaptation reaction of your organism and should not induce you to resume treatment. If you have difficulty stopping the drug, please talk to your doctor. To avoid, as far as possible, such an adaptation reaction,

It is always possible to start a new Lexotanil therapy at a later time on the doctor's prescription.
